Making the News: An essential guide for effective media relations

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

John LonghurstJohn Longhurst has over 25 years experience in communications with non-profit organizations. He has worked as Associate Editor of the Mennonite Brethren Herald; directed communications for Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Canada and Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA); and was founder and editor of the Dallas (Texas) Peace Times. Through his work, he has travelled to Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South America, Central America and the Caribbean and across North America, reporting about relief and development projects. He presently is Director of Communications and Marketing at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) in Winnipeg.

John is a freelance Faith Page columnist and reporter for the Winnipeg Free Press, and also writes regularly for various church-related publications. He is also Associate Editor of Canadian Railway Modeller.

In addition to his writing and other work, John presents workshops on media relations for non-profit groups and for faith groups.

In 2006 John was recognized for his “Distinguished contribution to religious communications in Canada” by the Association of Roman Catholic Communicators of Canada. The award is presented to any religious communicator, project, or organization to recognize their contributions on a national level to religious communications in a pluralistic, secular society. Past award winners include Leo Rampen (1984), Roy Bonisteel (1989), Ron Keast (1990) and Michael McAteer (1994).

Also in 2006, John received a certificate of appreciation from the Islamic Social Services Association for his “generous support for the Muslim community in Winnipeg.” In 2005 he received an Award of Excellence from the Associated Church Press for his column writing in the Mennonite Weekly Review.

In 1998 John helped conceive and organize Canada's first national conference on faith and the media, held in Ottawa at Carleton University. He also helped found the Centre for Faith and the Media, based in Calgary.

In addition to Making the News, John authored a Media Guide to Mennonites in Canada and a Media Guide to Religion in Manitoba.
